Anglican Network in Canada NEWS RELEASE 

19 August 2010Archbishop John Chew Hiang Chea – Primate of the Anglican Province of Southeast Asia, Bishop of Singapore and Chairman of the Global South Primates Steering Committee – will be in Vancouver September 18-19 for a weekend of special gatherings at the Anglican Network Church of the Good Shepherd.  Dr Chew is one of the most respected and influential leaders in the global Anglican Communion.  All are welcome at these meetings.

We are honoured and delighted to welcome Archbishop Chew to Vancouver,” said Bishop Stephen Leung, rector of the Anglican Network Church of the Good Shepherd and leader of the Anglican Network in Canada’s Asian Mission.  “He is coming on behalf of the Anglican Relief and Development Fund Canada and will be showing us how we can make a real and lasting difference in our world.”  The Anglican Relief and Development Fund Canada is dedicated to restoring health, hope and dignity to suffering people.

Archbishop Chew, who resides in Singapore, was elected in March 2010 to a second term as Primate of the 100,000-member Anglican Province of Southeast Asia.   He holds a Doctorate in Old Testament Studies from Sheffield University (1982) and was principal of Trinity Theological College (Singapore) from 1991 until be was elected Bishop of Singapore in 2000.

In April of this year, he succeeded Archbishop Peter Akinola (now retired Primate of the Anglican Church of Nigeria) as chairman of the Global South Primates Steering Committee – a group that represents the vast majority of active, committed Anglicans worldwide.   (The number of Anglicans worldwide is said to be around 80 million.)

Dr Chew will speak at a 2:30pm public service September 18, at the Anglican Network Church of the Good Shepherd, as well as ministering Sunday morning, September 19 at 11am in the regular church worship service.  In addition, there is a dinner in his honour on September 18 at 5:30 pm in the church.
