Habs? Is that a new social justice idea from the ACoC?

The habs and the habs not.

    Kate says:

    stuck in Toronto says:

never thought I’d see the day when I cheered for the red, white and boo-hoo – what does “HABS” mean anyway.

    Cathy says:

What do the Toronto Maple Leafs, Raptors and Blue Jays all have in common?

    None of them play hockey.

Another one of these strange North American Sporting Ghetto games. ;-)

    Father Lawrence Winslow says:

If Philly defeats Boston it will put me in a horrible position – cheering for Montreal in the next round! Go Bruins Go! :) :):)

    Kate says:

Well, the Senators are out, and I did grow up in Montreal….

Besides, the Stanley Cup belongs in Canada!

Q: What do the Montreal Canadien have that the Toronto Maple Leafs don’t?
A: colour pictures of their last Stanley Cup win.

(I used to have a Senators T-shirt listing their Stanley Cup wins – the most recent being 1927.)

    stuck in Toronto says:

Well Padre, Boston can’t win cause I’m waiting till a Stanley Cup final is played between them and Toronto – Just to watch my hero MR. Don Cherry have a hernia on Coaches Corner.
Peter I’m aghast, that sounds positively British. uh I mean brutish uh or do I?
Kate me darlin nothing personal but I’ve decided to try a liberal stance – anybody but Montreal.

  11. 11
    Father Lawrence Winslow says:

Kate, I too spent my teenage years and early 20′s in Montreal. My playing rights were “owned” by Montreal for about 10 years (many moons ago). Go Bruins Go! :) :):) It doesn’t matter who wins the cup, the players winning it are primarily Canadian.

    Kate says:

#10 You planning on living till you’re 250?

  13. 13
    Kate says:

#11 For me it was my elementary school years. My family was part of the “Anglo Exodus” of 1976.

  14. 14
    Father Lawrence Winslow says:

@13 Kate, I graduated from University in Montreal at 20 years old and finished Junior A the same year (1961). I went into the computer business and then the Priesthood and arrived finally here in Manitoba where I am now retired. As a Canadian of British/American heritage, while I love Quebec, I still like to see anyone but Montreal win (even in tiddly-winks, save Philly! :) :):)

    Eph 3:20 says:

Q: What do you call 20 millionaires sitting around a TV watching the Stanley Cup playoffs?
    A: The Toronto Maple Leafs

Go Habs Go! Bring home Lord Stanley’s Mug

    stuck in Toronto says:

Hi Kate – 250! ho ho ho (good one) may depend, I have it on good scriptural authority that shortly after the Adam and Eve fiasco they began the long journey back to God’s graces by donning the Toronto Logo. This of course puts our Saviour’s loyalties in hockey
favourably with Leaf Nation. Maybe he will come back early and let the good Padre and I stick around, after all Leaf and Boston Fans deserve the most sympathy!

  17. 17
    stuck in Toronto says:

Eph – at least the Anglican ones anyway!
PS – been in Montreal twice…….got arrested both times!

  18. 18
    Gerry O'Brien says:

Oh my, I imagine this will start another “go round”, however, I don’t care…….
All you retreaded “habs” fans better watch out for whatever comes out of the Western conference…….Hawks or Sharks…..won’t make any difference. The Young guns of Chicago got rid of the weakling canucks and the Sharks got rid of Detroit. Look out.
Who cares about a “canadian” team winning anyway…..Most of the players on most of the teams are “Canadians” and the rest are aliens from round the world.
This hockey racket is no longer about canada, it’s about money and that is all.
My team is out…..The Pens……but there you have it. still wouldn’t ever get me cheering for the Canadiens, eh! Last time I cheered for Montreal Canadiens was when they had Harvey, geoffrion, Richard(s), beliveau, Tom Johnson and a raft of other “Canadian” Hockey players and the then the other five teams were all “Canadian” hockey Players also.
The Memorial cup is more fun to watch now!!!

  19. 19
    Kate says:

    “Retreaded”?

  20. 20
    Warren says:

Gerry (#18), according to Wikipedia, for the 08/09 season, 52.3% of players in the NHL were “Canadian”. About 25% were European.

  21. 21
    stuck in Toronto says:

It’s still “our game” as is proven when competition reverts to national interests. and what a thing of beauty to watch (anyone fall asleep during a soccer match?)

  22. 22
    stuck in Toronto says:

Gerry you have a point about money but there comes a time in hockey competition when the boys and girls play a different game I don’t know what its called, heart comes close – but THAT transcends money and is what wins in the end.

  23. 23
    Gerry O'Brien says:

    22 Stuck:
That can happen for you and I in about 20 more years when the “second” childhood enters (or sooner)……..

warren, How did I know you would present the stats on numbers of canadians……ha! Where did the other 22.7% come from, the USA?

Kate – retreaded is just one of those “island” things you might not understand.

  24. 24
    Warren says:

Gerry (#23), Mexico, actually. Just kidding.

  25. 25
    Kate says:

Hey, I married a Newfoundlander, and I’ve never heard that one.

  26. 26
    Gerry O'Brien says:

Kate: I thought Bill was a Labradorian…Is that not true?

  27. 27
    Kate says:

    Same province, isn’t it?

(Should I duck and run now?)

  28. 28
    Gerry O'Brien says:

I think you better ask Bill if there is a difference between Labradorians and Newfoundlanders and THEN duck and run! Ha!!

  29. 29
    Gerry O'Brien says:

By the way…….All you Habs fans better start duckin and runnin too. Looks like they are in over their heads now (they were before except for a red-hot goaltender).
Looks like The Blackhawks are kinda trompin on the sharks eh?

    finals – Hawks vs flyers………Hawks in six…..

  30. 30
    Kate says:

HAH! You were saying, Gerry? GO HABS!!!

  31. 31
    Gerry O'Brien says:

Ahemmmmmmmm??? Let’s see what happens next game….. this series is unbelievable……. I guess it’s a matter of which goalie gets the next shutout, eh?
    Still saying Hawks vs flyers

  32. 32
    Gerry O'Brien says:

Is this worthy of another Ahemmmmmmmmmmm??? I think Philly got a shutout (again) yesterday…… Flyers up 3 games to 1….. bye bye Habs!!

  33. 33
    Kate says:

Don’t gloat, Gerry, it’s unbecomming. Besides, it’s not over yet!

  34. 34
    Gerry O'Brien says:

    Ahemmmmmmmmmmmm……Kate……You were saying?/

  35. 35
    Kate says:

Baseball is a lovely sport, and Ottawa has a team again.
