The Anglican Church in British Columbia looked at re-structuring recommendations at its synod this weekend.
According to a release from the diocese, the synod (the church’s legislative body) will sit again before any decisions are made about church closures.
No date has been chosen, except that it will be a Saturday before May 2.
The recommendations tabled in January would see 13 churches on Vancouver island and the gulf islands closed to help alleviate declining membership and finances in the Anglican church.
Here is a list of approved actions as provided by the diocese:
That the Synod of the Diocese of British Columbia agree in principle with the intention and urgency of the Diocesan Transformation Team Report, encouraging conversion toward a new emphasis on Mission and life-changing growth in the name of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and on developing new ways of being and doing church, while honouring the best of Anglican Tradition.

“That endowments, parish funds and other net current assets upon disestablishment remain with the former parish in its new entity.”
Not surprising that an alteration of the new canons tops the list of motions passed. The new disestablishment canons passed in 2008 short sightedly allowed the diocese to claim all the funds from disestablished churches, while mandating that any debt of said disestablished churches go with the remaining congregation to the receiving parish. How fair was that???
I recall a conservative member of St Matthias pointing this money grab of the diocese out to synod, but she got voted down b/c she was from St Matthias.
It is nice to know there is such a recent precedent for not following canons duly voted upon and brought into force in the diocese when people feel it is in their best interests to do so. So what authority does canon law and the bishop have in the diocese of BC now?
