Thanks for the link. After reading the comments thread there, I actually find myself more pessimistic, but at least it’s evidence of mutability. My son says that sexual performance isn’t a problem with women but he falls in love only with men. I wonder if it was something in our parenting that caused this, but the usual theories don’t fit. I was never particularly absent as a father, and the split with my wife didn’t happen until years after this manifested.

I don’t think his attractions are really a matter of “defiance” because he would honestly prefer to be straight. Hopefully he’ll be chaste now that his pal has dumped him after a year together, but I recall what it’s like at that age and now I have to put up with much sullen moping around the house. Pray for him.

I read it with great interest on account of my son, who has struggled with homosexual attraction since his early teens.

The 23% conversion rate among those who participated in the study suggests that change is at least possible. However, it’s a fairly small sample (98 started but 26 dropped out along the way and are statistically excluded) so further work is needed to replicate the findings. I note that the study population was highly-motivated (91.8% identified themselves as “born again’). Also, the average participant was 37.5 years old, so most were at an age where sex drive is naturally tapering down anyway. Finally, conversion was generally incomplete. Most of the 23% who reported themselves converted to heterosexuality “did not report themselves to be without experience of homosexual arousal, and they did not report their heterosexual orientation to be unequivocal and uncomplicated.” It would be useful to extend the study to determine long-term recidivism.
