2008 has been an extremely eventful year for Anglicans in Canada and worldwide. Many faithful Anglican Christians have defended the faith in a sacrificial way.
Who would you nominate as:
- Canadian Anglican hero of the year. This could be a parish priest or bishop taking a stand within the ACoC or ANiC, a theologian or a layperson
- The International Anglican hero of the year. Again this could be a member of the clergy or a layperson.
Nominate as many people as you like and please state why you are nominating the person.

My nominations, in the international category:
2nd Runner-up: Archbishop Henry Orombi of Uganda really shot into prominence in 2008, boycotting Lambeth, helping to organize GAFCON, and taking real leadership in the Communion.
1st Runner-up: Archbishop Daniel Den Bul of the Sudan for his courageous stand at Lambeth Conference, releasing a statement calling on the Canadian and US Churches to return to Anglican (and Christian) orthodoxy. He also has been working hard for peace and recovery in Sudan.
Winner: Archbishop Greg Venables for defying protocol for the sake of principle in providing emergency ecclesial oversight for clergy and congregations in North America – as well as in Recife.
+Don and +Malcolm, (but I’m terribly biased towards the latter) for their courage to become the shepherds of a scattered flock when they had a very secure retirement.
My pastor – well, all of them really, and their families – for risking their livelihoods to preserve the Anglican way of following Jesus.
When do nominations close? I have some ideas, but need to know how much time I have to think about it.
Toral
Toral [#4],
No hurry, this is supposed to be an enjoyable exercise not a stressful one.
My nominations are the silent members of ANiC parishes who have spent endless years of volunteer service in resonse to ACoC ministry initiatives, who have given countless hundreds of thousands of dollars of tythes to ACoC parishes and dioceses, who have baked, cleaned, painted and paid of mortgages of AcoC parishes and rectories, and who then have resolutely voted to leave it all behind for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ. God bless them all.
Amen to that.
J. I. Packer and Greg Venables, for unyielding integrity.
I vote for # 6 !!!
Yes, #6 is good. But I’ve gotta put in a word for the Venerable Charlie Masters. Not only has he been carrying much of the load in ANiC as National Director, he started out the year as an ANiC parish priest (St George’s Lowville), AND he was General Secretary of the Common Cause Partners and now the Anglican Church in North America.
Canadian Layperson of the Year: Alan MacGowan of Zacchaeus Fellowship who passed away this December. Read his testimony here: http://www.zacchaeus.ca/MacGowan.html.
International: Archbishop Greg Venables and Dr. J. I. Packer.
Thank you all of you for your integrity and loving obedience to the Word.
I give thanks to God for Dr. J.I. Packer as an evangelical theologian, Bishop-elect Stephen Andrews and Bishop Nazir-Ali, and for all the faithful in Canada.
Dear Sir,
If there was a category for American nominees then I would nominate my bishop. Or I guess it would work for international area.
My bishop has stood up time and again preaching the Good News of Jesus Christ. He is a very firm believer and defender that Jesus IS The Resurrection and the Life. He makes no beans about that Jesus is Our Lord and Saviour.
He also is a firm defender of the seven sacraments. He pushes hard on the need for all Christians to go to confession. And also pushes hard for transubstantiation in the Eucharist.
He also stands firm against women’s ordination, abortion, gay rights, euthanasia.
But he pushes hard for people to know that Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation through this he makes it clear to them to have a personal relationship with Jesus. But he always does it in a compassionate way.
Because of his hard line stance in these areas he has attracted a lot of liberal critics, even moderate ones.
You can visit our church website at restoration.freehostia.com. Therefore I nominate The Rt. Rev. Stonewall Shelton, F. C. J. as the Anglo-Catholic Bishop of the Year…or even Anglican of the year.
Pacem Anglicana,
Fr. Cameron
My nomination for Canadian Anglican of the year: the Venerable Charlie Masters, Executive Archdeacon of ANiC (and soon to be bishop, I hope), for grace under fire. Runner up: Cheryl Chang, ditto.
My nomination for International Anglican of the year: the Reverend Gregory Malia, summer vicar at St. James, Dundaff in the Diocese of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA, for demonstrating that a conservative Episcopal priest can be inhibited for extravagant tipping in a New York night club. Runner up: Gene Robinson at Lambeth, likewise for comic relief.
#14 — Hummmmmm,,,,, Did I miss a news release?
Reverend Gregory Malia. Calling him conservative seems a bit of a stretch.
#16
Well, okay: theologically conservative with regard to homosexuality.
Noli,
You’re never dull.
Peace,
Jim
Garth Hunt for his monthly biblical teaching and calling us to prayer
Dottie and Sheilagh, who left their ACoC congregations to start, along with others, a new House Group, then House Church, now Church Plant – all the while remaining in their local towns/villages, living amongst their former ‘pew-mates’. That’s what I call sacrifice.
I have to put in for Bishop Malcolm Harding who has suffered much at the hands of the Liberals here in Manitoba. A gracious humble man who stands through it all with his eyes fixed on the prize the preservation of the gospel. I also am very grateful for the dedication of Venerable Charlie Masters and Archbishop Gregory Venables. These are men that I have seen and heard and there are hundreds more standing in shadows so it is a difficult choice to make. God bless them all
I would like to nominate the Venerable Charlie Masters for his unstinting faith over the past several years, for leading , by example, the fight for the right and putting his own future in jeopardy for the greater goodness of the Church. Charlie is an example to us all.
My statement is simple……I’m not sure that any one person can possibly be nominated for either of these wonderful accolades. I would think that every layperson who left their parish behind; every priest who left while being subjected to namecalling, jeering, etc., every priest who’s own personal or family life was in turmoil throughout the year 2008; Bishop Harvey who has been called most every name you can think of in his own former Diocese let alone across the Country for taking a stand; Bishop Malcolm who has undergone the same garbage in Manitoba (especially in his former Diocese); and Archbishop Veneables on a worldwide scale by the liberal leaders of other provinces.
Personally, I think they are all deserving and the nominations should include every person in the USA, CANADA, WORLDWIDE who have taken the stand for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and for the Supremacy of Scripture found in the Holy Bible.
They are all men and women of great stature and all are equally nominated in my mind.
Perhaps a better category would be to name the “stinkers” of the year within the worldwide and national Anglican “liberal” communions. I would think KJS would take it standing on her head;
but then; there are those on the local and national scenes in Canada that could give her a run……even some Archdeacons!
